I love the time that remains so much: Laetitia Carton films the traces of an artistic utopia

After La Petite Classe, Laetitia Carton is preparing a new documentary film, I So Love the Remaining Time (Je l’aime tant le temps qui reste), dedicated to an extraordinary family and collective story. To help bring this project to fruition, you are invited to join its creation on Ulule.

At the heart of the film is Pascale Ben. In the late 1960s, at just twenty years old, she joined the Roy Hart Theatre, a group of London-based artists who placed the human voice at the center of a radical artistic process. A few years later, the community settled in a ruined château in Malérargues, in the Cévennes region. Around forty people invented another way of living and creating there, placing the voice at the core of their adventure.

Fifty years later, this story continues to resonate

Pascale is also the mother of Lucie Rivers-Moore. Having long kept her distance from this past, Lucie revisits her mother’s journey and gradually discovers a story that, despite herself, is also her own. It is this encounter between a mother and her daughter that Laetitia Carton chooses to film. A relationship that is sometimes tender, sometimes rougher, through which the portrait of a unique artistic community and those who brought it to life emerges.

Returning to Malérargues with Pascale, Laetitia Carton met some of the pioneers of the Roy Hart Theatre, as well as those who still live at the château today. They reflect on what drove them to join this adventure, what they found there, but also what they sometimes lost along the way.

Behind the Roy Hart Theatre experience lies a reflection on our need for community and for believing together in something greater than ourselves. I So Love the Remaining Time thus explores the ideals that can give birth to communities and open spaces of freedom, but also the contradictions, blind spots, and wounds that these experiences can leave behind.
