Marie Madeleine by Gessica Généus wins the Best Film Award at the 2026 Villa Medici Film Festival

For its 6th edition, held in Rome from September 16 to 20, 2026, the Villa Medici Film Festival jury — chaired by Zar Amir Ebrahimi, Rosa Barba, and Radu Jude — awarded the prestigious Best Film Award to Marie Madeleine, directed by Haitian filmmaker Gessica Généus.

A poignant drama between faith and marginalization

Premiering in Italy as part of the international competition, Marie Madeleine captivated the jury with its powerful message. Gessica Généus, who also plays the lead role, portrays a sex worker whose life is turned upside down when she meets a young evangelist in the midst of a spiritual crisis.

A festival rooted in cinematic innovation

Since 2021, the Villa Medici Film Festival has established itself as an essential gathering point for cinema and contemporary art. Across its three sections (the international competition, Focus, and outdoor screenings at the Piazzale), the event celebrates the diversity of formats and storytelling.

This 2026 edition was marked by deep emotion, being dedicated to the memory of Lili Hinstin (1977–2026), an iconic figure of independent cinema who began her career at the Villa Medici itself.
