Barataria

YEAR : 2021
GENRE : Documentary
LENGHT : 48 minutes

Barataria, tells the singular story of El Quiñon, a new town south of Madrid, born out of the real estate bubble and brought to a halt by the 2008 financial crisis. Conceived as an urban utopia, the town was left frozen in time, filled with unfinished buildings and deserted streets—an “island surrounded by land,” as in Don Quixote. Within this ghostly setting, the director films the city as a character in its own right and focuses on the lives of the residents who chose to remain. Through dreams, disillusionment, and small acts of resistance, Barataria questions what it means to inhabit a place marked by the failure of a collective dream. The film offers a poetic reflection on resilience and the ability to keep dreaming, even in the midst of ruins.
